L’eau cométaire de Jupiter

En juillet 1994, la comète Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) a impacté Jupiter de manière spectaculaire. Comme les comètes sont des corps riches en eau, la détection de l’eau dans la stratosphère de Jupiter en 1997 par l’Infrared Space Observatory (Feuchtgruber et al. 1997) semblait indiquer une origine cométaire.

Cependant, plus d’une décennie d’observations avec SWAS, Cassini et Odin nous ont apportés des indices supplémentaires (Lellouch et al. 2002, 2006, Cavalié et al. 2008, 2012), mais pas de preuve. Nous avons cartographié l’émission de l’eau de la stratosphère de Jupiter avec Herschel en 2009-2010 avec les instruments HIFI et PACS. La résolution spatiale combinée à la très haute résolution spectrale de nos observations prouve que la majeure partie de l’eau de la stratosphère de Jupiter a été déposée par la comète SL9 en 1994. Il y a, en effet, une surabondance d’eau dans l’hémisphère sud de la planète, dans lequel la comète est tombée. Par ailleurs, l’altitude où se trouve l’eau est pleinement compatible avec les prédictions d’évolution post-impact.

L’eau stratosphérique de Jupiter vient donc bel et bien de la comète Shoemaker-Levy 9.

Distribution spatiale (en termes de densité de colonne) de l’eau dans la stratosphère de Jupiter observée par Herschel. La surabondance vue dans l’hémisphère sud de la planète est une réminiscence des impacts de 1994 dans ce même hémisphère.
