An oath during all PhD’s defences in France

In 1998 the philosopher Michel Serres (below) in France, in 2005 the physicist Jozef Rotblat (left) in UK, laureate of the Peace Nobel Prize, propose that scientists take an oath for an ethical practice of science. Such an oath is implemented in France since 2022, reaching over 10,000 PhDs every year, in all research fields. Here, prepared within the French Académie des sciences, is an overview of the oath’s history and current implementation, to which I have been associated.
