His scientific work accompanied the emergence of i<strong>nfrared astronomy<\/strong>, developing observation from telescopes on Earth, in aircrafts and spaceborne. In search of <strong>high-resolution images<\/strong>, he was one of the architects of the European Very Large Telescope in Chile, with <strong>interferometry<\/strong> and <strong>adaptive optics<\/strong>. Elected to the Acad\u00e9mie des sciences in 1991, committed to <strong>science education<\/strong>, he joined physicists Georges Charpak &amp; Yves Qu\u00e9r\u00e9 to create <em><strong>La main \u00e0 la p\u00e2te<\/strong> <\/em>in 1995. He chaired this Foundation (2011-2014) and then created the <strong>Office for Climate Education<\/strong> in 2018.
